Flower Photography: Water Hyacinth

Water Hyacinth photographed at Istana Park

The Water Hyacinth has special adaptations to allow it to grow and spread rapidly in freshwater. They can withstand extremes of nutrient supply, pH level, temperature, and even grow in toxic water. They grow best in still or slow-moving water. The seeds are dispersed by birds and can remain viable for 15-20 years. But the main method of reproduction is vegetatively, through stolons. A single plant under ideal conditions can produce 3,000 others in 50 days, and cover an area of 600 sq metres in a year. ~ SOURCE

  5. Love your photos and this one of the flower is so very beautiful. Thank you for visiting my blog and leaving a comment. I have been going back through your blog looking at your wonderful photos and read that your husband brought you a macro lens - I would love one, so I showed it to my husband, a sort of unsubtle hint ;-) My problems is (apart from cost) is that there are so many and I don't know anything about them to choose one.
