The American Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber) is a large species of flamingo closely related to the Greater Flamingo and Chilean Flamingo.
It was formerly considered conspecific with the Greater Flamingo, but that treatment is now widely viewed (e.g. by the American and British Ornithologists' Unions) as incorrect due to a lack of evidence.
It has also been known as the Caribbean Flamingo, but the species' presence in the Galápagos makes that name problematic. It is the only flamingo which naturally inhabits North America.
Like all flamingos, it lays a single chalky white egg on a mud mound, between May and August; incubation until hatching takes from 28 to 32 days; both parents brood the young for a period of up to 6 years when they reach sexual maturity. Their life expectancy of 40 years is one of the longest in birds.

ReplyDeleteMust have gone to gym very often.
hehe.. yes they only did cross trainer there ! No squats ! and NO crunches !
DeleteThere so vibrant ! You reminded me of my 4th grade project where I had to draw a bird and my sister drew this for me on a chart paper. I didnt like this at first, it was a strange kind of bird to me.. but when I got appreciation and a prize for it in school so was more than happy. It was pasted in my class 4th activity board and recently I got to know that the flamingo chart was now in our artroom resting in a wall, framed !!
