Legal dramas of different types populate Hollywood films. Some of these productions featuring attorneys represent some of the most memorable films in the history of Hollywood. Five highly regarded films include the most famous attorney characters in the history of cinema.
One of the reasons these particular movie attorneys have garnered fame is because of the believability of the characters. However, the fact that these attorneys were portrayed by skilled and talented actors added to the allure of these motion picture lawyers.
Atticus Finch

Perhaps the most famous Hollywood attorney of all is Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird. Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Harper Lee, To Kill a Mockingbird tells the tale of a Southern lawyer (Atticus Finch) defending a black man wrongly accused of rape. Finch is played by screen legend Gregory Peck. On some level, Atticus Finch became the role model for real world attorneys after the film's release in the early 1960s. In many ways, Atticus Finch is probably the best known, most famous of all Hollywood attorneys.
Vincent “Vinny” Gambini
Films featuring attorneys are not always dramas. Indeed, My Cousin Vinny represents a comedy that features one of the most memorable, and now famous, attorneys in the movies. Vinny Gambini, a reckless and fairly recent law school graduate, manages to keep two men from being convicted in this cinematic romp. The brash character takes on the legal system in a way that had not really been seen before in motion pictures. Joe Pesci portrays Vinny Gambini perfectly, helping to establish the actor as a major player in the Hollywood community.
William Jennings Bryan
Spencer Tracy portrays real life attorney William Jennings Bryan in Inherit the Wind. The movie tells the story of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial, litigation that focused on the teaching of evolution in schools. Although the real William Jennings Bryan created his own real world reputation, the movie version of the man added to the real life attorney's fame.
John Payne
The Miracle on 34th Street is a Christmas classic. It is also a film that features one of the most famous film lawyers in the history of cinema, John Payne. Payne is called upon to defend Kris Kringle (or at least a man who insists he is Kris Kringle) in a court of law, certainly one of the most famous clients of all time. The film has delighted audiences for years and was named by the American Film Institute as one of the most inspiring movies of all time.
Lt. Daniel Kaffee
Tom Cruise played the role of JAG lawyer Lt. Daniel Kaffee in A Few Good Men. The scene in which Lt. Daniel Kaffee cross examines screen legend Jack Nicholson, who plays a commanding officer in the movie, represents one of the most dramatic legal scenes in film history. The character of Lt. Daniel Kaffee ends up on the famous list because of the character's ability to rise above his situation to accomplish the highly challenging task at hand.
