Although there are a lot of things to love about snow, it can disrupt the day to no end. It can close schools, trap you in your house, stop you from driving...and that’s just the start of it. This doesn’t mean you need to be cooped up at home depressed and bored though. There are a ton of ways you can turn this snow day into something positive. Have some family fun on snow days with these ideas!
Make Some Homemade Pizza
A snow day is the perfect excuse to have an extra special meal in the evening, but that doesn’t mean it needs to be too unhealthy. Why not make your own pizza together, or another meal you enjoy as a family? You can use lots of veg and a healthy sprinkle of cheese, as well as chicken if you enjoy eating meat. It’s quite simple to do, and if you want to make it even easier, you can use wraps as the base rather than dough! We love this recipe in my house, but you can try something different if you prefer. Stew and chili are always good meals to cook on snow days, as they warm you from the inside out! If you don’t mind the mess, get the kids to help you and bake some cupcakes for after too!
Analyse Snowflakes Together
We’re told that snowflakes are all unique, but how can we know for sure? They are way too small for the naked eye to see. Why not go outside and investigate for yourselves? All you need is a piece of dark material and a magnifying glass. Catch the flakes on your material and look at them through the glass to see what you find out. This is a great little science lesson for your kids too!
Go Sledging
You might not be able to go too far from the house, but that doesn’t mean you can’t go sledging. You could pull your kids around on a makeshift sledge, or really treat them and find a big hill to sledge down. Things like this will be some of the best memories your kids ever have!
Build a Snowman
Go outside for a while and build a snowman as a family. You could have a snowman building competition, to see who can build the best snowman. You could even make a snowman family! There’s nothing stopping you from working on one together if you like, though. How about building your own Walt Disney Olaf?!
Have Fun With Snow Graffiti
There’s nothing quite like jumping in and destroying a pure white blanket of snow. Kids love it! Why not take it to the next level? Give them water bottles filled with water and food coloring, and they can make the snow look colourful and pretty! You’ll definitely get a few photo opportunities by doing this.
Homemade Hot Chocolate
Having a hot chocolate on a snow day is perfect, but having a homemade hot chocolate is even better! You can do this using just milk, melted chocolate, and some marshmallows. If you want it to be seriously indulgent, add squirty cream too. This is something yummy everybody can have after their special dinner.
Make Some Quizzes
Home quizzes can be a lot of fun. Make it a competition and see who can get the most right answers! If you don’t want to make your own, you can find plenty online. There are quizzes of all kinds, from technology logo quizzes to film quizzes. Then all you need to do is print the technology logo game cheat and you can get started! Make sure you pick a quiz appropriate for their ages.
Introduce Them to Audio Books
Whether your kids love reading or feel indifferent about it, audio books can be a great way to experience a story. Some say it’s cheating, but those people have never listened to an audio book! Audio books allow kids to listen to a story that’s above their reading level, and improve their listening and comprehension skills. I love doing this when my kids are off school, as I don’t feel as if their day has been wasted at all. They’ve still developed skills and learned some things! You can all listen together and this will be a wonderful family activity.
Family Nap Time
You probably have around 6 hours to kill on a snow day where you need to come up with some activities. Why not decide not to do anything at all and have family nap time instead? The kids will love this, and you can make it even more fun by making a fort to nap in! Give them sleeping bags and blankets if they like to make this experience even better. Naps are good for you, and they can help you to recharge after a long morning. Take 30 minutes to an hour to rest your eyes and just relax together! Make sure you set an alarm though, so you don’t end up sleeping the whole day away.
Have a Cosy Lazy Day
When it’s snowing, there’s no better time to have a cosy lazy day together. When the weather is nice, it’s great to go outside and explore. Sometimes when the weather isn’t so nice, it can be too harsh to go outside. Why not let your kids spend the day in their comfy clothes, on the sofa with a blanket. Give them books to read, control over the TV, and plenty of healthy snacks (a few treats too, if you like). If you have a fire, make sure you have it lit to really set the scene!
Snow days can come as a surprise, but that doesn’t mean you need to be unprepared. Make sure you’re ready by remembering some of these activities. Your kids are going to love them! Do you have any special activities you like to do on snow days? I’d love to hear about them, so don’t hesitate to leave me a comment.
Have fun with your family!
